Caring for Texas Wildlife ... One Animal at a Time
SHELTER ANIMAL CARE
TWRC observes Federal and State laws requiring individuals handling protected species to be at least 18 years of age. A list of protected and unprotected species can be found later in this document.
In addition, no one may handle any wildlife at TWRC unless:
The person is a permitted or sub-permitted wildlife rehabilitator
The person has completed Admission Desk 101 training class which allows them to accept new admissions with the exception of high risk animals (skunks, raccoons, bats, coyotes, and foxes)
NOTE: We never accept any size skunk, coyote or fox into the shelter.
TWRC can offer referrals for skunks
Coyote concerns should be directed to Animal Control
Fox concerns should be directed to Texas Parks and Wildlife
Most volunteers will handle only the Education animals. However, if you feel uneasy handling any animal, do not handle the animal! If you do handle animals, always exercise caution. Many wild animals are capable of inflicting serious injuries or may have diseases that may be transmitted to humans.
Recommended preventative shots:
Current tetanus shot – all volunteers
Pre-rabies exposure shots - a high-risk animal can only be handled by a rehabber if they have taken this series of shots.
NO ONE may touch or handle high risk animals in any way unless s/he has had this rabies inoculation series (the first three rabies shots plus a Gamma Globulin (day 0, 7, 21/28))
Protective equipment/cleansers provided at the shelter:
Latex gloves
Heavy protective gloves for handling certain animals
Eyewear
Anti-bacterial hand liquid
TWRC Standard Operating Procedures:
Always wear appropriate protective equipment
Always wash hands after handling an animal
Report all animal bites or scratches to the Shift Leader or TWRC staff immediately
