Caring for Texas Wildlife ... One Animal at a Time
RESCUE - RABBIT
Baby Rabbit
If the rabbit is 4-5 inches long, it is old enough to be on its own. If it is in danger from your pet, you can move the rabbit to a safer place (down the street, etc). If you have found a nest of baby rabbits, and the nest is intact, and they are in no immediate danger, do not disturb them. The mother rabbit comes to the nest only twice a day, usually at dawn and dusk, to feed the babies. Flour can be sprinkled around the nest and then checked for the mother's footprints to make sure she is tending to the babies. If the baby is tiny or injured, keep it warm and contained, and take it to the Shelter.
Adult Rabbit
Carefully contain the animal. NEVER pick up a rabbit by the ears. Be sure to support the rabbit's hindquarters, as they can kick hard enough to break their own back.
Take the animal to the Shelter. Call TWRC if you need help or advice in containing the animal.
