Caring for Texas Wildlife ... One Animal at a Time

NUISANCE WILDLIFE

Countless animals are injured or orphaned each year due to habitat loss.  Our wildlife becomes casualties of collisions with vehicles and man-made structures, pet attacks, and poisonous agricultural chemicals.  In Houston, animal habitat loss associated with vast urban development forces thousands of people to deal with wildlife in an urban setting.

TWRC believes strongly in educating the public about wildlife and providing humane options for dealing with nuisance wildlife.  In addition to the information provided on this website, TWRC volunteers are available 7 days a week (see Shelter Hours) to help you with your wildlife concerns.  Please don't hesitate to contact us - by phone or by email.

There are many things you can do to make your home less desirable to wildlife.  However, it is important to note the natural  history of the animal/bird you are excluding so as not to trap babies in your home.  You must also be aware of state and federal laws that protect native Texas species, including their nests and eggs.

Here are some general things you can do:

  1. Do not keep food for pets outside overnight.  This can attract wildlife looking for a free handout.

  2. Repair any holes in roofing before wildlife finds them and moves in.

  3. Apply a commercial chimney cap.

  4. Do not leave piles of garbage (use a strong garbage can with a locking lid), logs, or other refuse which will attract animals.

  5. When animals appear to have taken residence, put bright lights, a mirror, noise (radio on talk channel or hard rock station), fox/predator urine (can be purchased at Academy and other sporting goods stores), or dog feces near where the animal is living.  Also, rags soaked in ammonia can work.  This may take a couple of days, but the animal will clear out, and repairs should be made immediately.

  6. Shake-Away Granules is powdered predator urine sold at the Shelter and through this website (see Products) for a donation of $17.00 + S&H.  It is 100% organic, easy to use, non-toxic, and safe to use around children, pets, and the environment.

  7. Eco-88 is a pet stain remover to use in removing blood, urine, feces, sweat, vomit and animal odors.  This product will permanently remove even your toughest pet stains and odors.  It is sold at the Shelter and through this website (see Products) for a donation of $17.00 + S&H.

If none of the following options is feasible, please contact TWRC, and we'll be happy to provide other alternatives.
